Fresh tension has gripped parts of North 24 Parganas on the eve of the West Bengal Assembly Election 2026 after the body of a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker was recovered on Thursday.
The deceased, identified as Masiur Kazi (38), was a resident of Gangania in the Champatala Gram Panchayat area of Deganga and served as a Booth President of the TMC. His body was found in Jhujurgacha, under the jurisdiction of Haroa Police Station, triggering panic and unrest in the locality.
According to family members, Kazi had stepped out of his house around 9 pm on Wednesday after receiving a phone call. When he failed to return through the night, his family and local residents began searching for him early Thursday morning. Soon after, a body was discovered in Jhujurgacha, within the Shankarpur Panchayat area, which was later identified as Kazi by his relatives.
Police sources said the body bore multiple injury marks, indicating a violent assault. Preliminary findings suggest that he may have been attacked with a heavy object. Authorities have, however, refrained from confirming the exact cause of death pending the post-mortem report.
The body has been sent for autopsy, and an investigation is underway to ascertain the motive behind the killing. While police are probing both political and personal angles, family members have alleged that Kazi was deliberately lured out through a phone call as part of a premeditated plan.
The incident has heightened anxiety in the region, especially given its timing shortly after the announcement of elections. Local residents reported an atmosphere of fear, with security being stepped up in the area.
Investigators are examining all possible leads, including call records and local inputs, to determine whether the murder was politically motivated or the result of personal enmity.
