The Trinamool Congress suffered another jolt on Sunday with the killing of Piyush Ghosh, a local unit president in Birbhum’s Srinidhipur, marking the second murder of a TMC functionary in as many days in West Bengal.

According to police sources, Ghosh received a phone call around midnight on Saturday and left his residence shortly after. He was found dead around 4 am on a road barely a kilometre from his home, lying beside his motorcycle in a pool of blood.

“A bullet fired from close range pierced the back of his head and exited through the front,” said a police officer. Preliminary forensic findings have supported this claim, though further examination is awaited.

The killing comes barely 48 hours after another TMC leader was murdered in Kolkata-adjacent Bhangar, stirring unease within the party ranks. Ghosh held the position of area president in the Sainthia region and was reportedly active in local organisational matters.

The body was rushed to Bolpur Subdistrict Hospital by family members and party workers, where he was declared brought dead.

Police have detained three individuals for questioning, including two women, though no formal arrests had been made till reports last came in.

“The nature of the killing suggests the involvement of someone familiar. While a political motive cannot be ruled out, we are also probing possible business disputes,” the officer said.

Ghosh’s family maintains that the murder was politically driven and accused unnamed rivals of targeting him for his growing influence. TMC leaders in Birbhum echoed the sentiment, calling the murder a “cowardly act” meant to spread fear among grassroots workers.

The incident has triggered political unrest in the area, with angry supporters demanding swift justice and greater protection for local leaders. Senior district officials have been directed to monitor the situation closely to prevent further flare-ups.

The police continue their investigation to determine the motive behind the targeted killing, which has once again brought into focus the spiralling political violence in the state’s rural regions.
