TMC MP from Serampore, Hooghly, Kalyan Banerjee sustained a head injury on Sunday during a clash between his followers and BJP workers outside the Chanditala Police Station, where tensions escalated over a protest program organised by the Bengal’s former ruling party.
According to reports, Banerjee suffered a blow to the head during the scuffle, resulting in a laceration. He was administered immediate first aid at the scene, and his condition is currently stated to be stable.
The incident occurred during a scheduled demonstration by the TMC, which had organised a program to submit a memorandum protesting the recent arrests of several party leaders and activists. Banerjee was leading the delegation.
Tension began to build even before the memorandum could be submitted, as workers and supporters from both the TMC and the BJP gathered outside the police station. Eyewitnesses alleged that BJP supporters raised slogans of “Chor, Chor” targeting TMC, triggering a heated verbal exchange between the two sides.
The situation quickly spiraled into chaos, prompting intervention from the police and central paramilitary forces deployed in the area. Despite their efforts, a physical altercation broke out, during which Banerjee sustained his injuries.
Following the clash, security arrangements were intensified in and around the police station, with additional forces deployed to prevent further escalation. The incident has created an atmosphere of tension in the locality, raising concerns among residents.
Both the TMC and the BJP have blamed each other for instigating the violence. However, no official statement has yet been issued by the TMC regarding the incident.
Police officials remain on high alert, monitoring the situation closely to ensure that law and order is maintained.
