TMC condemns BJP over vandalism at Agartala office

TMC office vandalised in Agartala by BJP supporters; police intercept six-member Trinamool delegation at airport as tensions flare in Tripura.

TMC leaders, including Kunal Ghosh, stage protest at Tripura airport on Wednesday.

Tension escalated in Tripura’s capital after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) office was allegedly vandalised by BJP supporters on Wednesday, sparking a political confrontation between the ruling BJP in Tripura and the TMC, which governs West Bengal.

Reports indicated that BJP workers and supporters had gathered outside the TMC office to protest an alleged attack on a BJP MP and MLA in flood-affected North Bengal. During the demonstration, a section of protesters allegedly vandalised the office, tearing party flags and banners.

A six-member TMC delegation, including party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, state minister Birbaha Hansda, MPs Sayani Ghosh, Pratima Mondal, Sushmita Dev and leader Sudeep Raha, arrived in Agartala to assess the situation. However, police intercepted the delegation at Agartala airport, prompting them to stage a sit-in protest on the airport premises.

The TMC strongly condemned the attack, accusing the BJP of using violence to silence opposition voices. In an official statement shared on social media, the party said, “Those who resort to violence to suppress the voice of their opponents even while in power are actually revealing their weakness and moral bankruptcy.”

The statement added, “On the one hand, the BJP talks about ‘saving democracy’, but on the other hand, it is destroying the foundation of democracy from state to state. Trinamool will not be afraid or back down from this. The BJP can burn party offices, tear posters, and intimidate worker, but it cannot erase the mentality of resistance.”

The TMC asserted that every Trinamool worker and citizen who believes in justice stands firmly against this “injustice.”

“Not only the people of Tripura but the entire country is watching what has happened. Everyone knows what the consequences of this injustice will be,” the party said.

Security has been heightened around major political offices in Agartala to prevent further clashes as tensions remain high.
