After being absconding for several days, Regina Bibi — wife of arrested Trinamool Congress (TMC) strongman Jahangir Khan — was arrested on Saturday from the Julpia area in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. Acting on a specific tip-off, police carried out a planned operation to apprehend her.
She is expected to be produced before a court, where investigators will seek custody for further interrogation. According to police sources, Regina played a central role in the violent incident that unfolded on June 16 at the Falta police station. The episode involved an alleged attempt to forcibly secure the release of Jahangir, who had been taken into custody earlier. Investigators claim that the unrest was not spontaneous but part of a premeditated conspiracy.
Police allege that Regina mobilised a group of supporters and led them to the police station, where they demanded Khan’s release. The situation quickly escalated into a confrontation, with chaos breaking out both inside and outside the station.
During the violence, stones and bricks were reportedly hurled at police personnel, resulting in injuries to several officers. There are also allegations of vandalism of government property and obstruction of official duties. Multiple cases were registered following the incident, and an FIR was lodged against Regina under several serious provisions of the law.
In addition to charges under Bharatiya NyayaSanhita (BNS), sections of the Arms Act and the Explosives Act have also been invoked. Investigators suspect that some individuals involved in the attack were carrying weapons and explosive materials while laying siege to the police station.
That time, Leader of Opposition, and now Bengal’s Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari had earlier demanded that stringent charges, including sedition, be invoked against those responsible for the attack.
Following the incident, Regina had gone into hiding, evading arrest despite multiple search operations. Police sources said she was eventually traced to a relative’s residence in Julpia based on confidential intelligence inputs, leading to her arrest.
Officials believe that her interrogation could provide crucial leads regarding the larger conspiracy, including the identities of key planners, financiers, and active participants in the incident. Several individuals have already been questioned, and efforts are ongoing to track down other suspects.
