In a shocking incident ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker was shot dead in the Baghajatin area of Kolkata late Wednesday night, triggering panic and raising fresh concerns over law and order in the city. The deceased has been identified as Rahul Dey, while another youth, Jeet Mukherjee, sustained critical injuries in the firing.
The incident took place on the rooftop of a residential complex in East Phoolbagan around 12:30 AM, where at least three rounds were reportedly fired.
Police from Patuli Police Station rushed to the spot after locals reported gunshots. Upon arrival, officers found both Rahul and Jeet lying in a bloodied condition on the rooftop. Rahul was declared dead at the scene, while Jeet was immediately taken for medical treatment.
According to initial findings, Jeet Mukherjee owns a flat in the residential complex. Family members of the deceased alleged that Jeet had invited Rahul to his flat on Tuesday. Although the two reportedly shared a close relationship in the past, they had not been in regular contact recently, raising questions about the sudden meeting.
The wife of the injured Jeet told the Police that a group of unidentified individuals barged into their flat on Wednesday night and opened fire. However, the identity of the attackers and the motive behind the shooting remain unclear.
Sources said that a group of people had gathered on the rooftop for dinner at the time of the incident. Forensic teams have since visited the site and collected evidence, while CCTV footage from the area is being examined.
Police are also questioning acquaintances and witnesses to piece together the sequence of events. Officers from the Homicide Section of Lalbazar police headquarters have joined the investigation, which is currently being pursued from multiple angles. Investigators are probing whether the attack was the result of personal enmity or linked to any larger conspiracy.
The incident has sparked tension in the locality, especially as it comes just weeks before the West Bengal Assembly elections, scheduled to be held in two phases on April 23 and 29. Security concerns have intensified following the shooting, with residents expressing alarm over the brazen nature of the crime in a densely populated area.
Police said efforts are underway to identify the assailants and determine the exact motive behind the attack.
