The CBI on Saturday arrested police officials in Tamil Nadu's Sivagangai district for murder in the custodial death of temple guard Ajit Kumar and took up the investigation, officials said. The probe into the case was entrusted to the central agency by the Tamil Nadu government.
The case was registered under section 103 (murder) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, a CBI spokesperson said in a release. "The CBI has filed a case on July 12, 2025, against police officials of Sivagangai District, Tamil Nadu, for the custodial death of Shri Ajit Kumar, who was working as temple guard at Madapuram Temple," the official added.
Kumar, aged 29, was a security guard at the Bhadrakaliamman Temple in Tiruppuvanam. The police arrested him on June 27 for interrogation in connection with a jewel robbery case.

He was declared "brought dead" by the police at a government hospital the following night. The autopsy, which lasted almost three hours, from 5.45 pm on June 29, indicated that Kumar had approximately 44 external injuries all over his legs, arms, stomach, and chest— at least 19 of them deep and went up to muscle.
The death might have happened around 12-24 hours prior to post mortem, the Madurai Medical College Hospital report by forensic surgeons stated, but could not determine the precise cause of death awaiting further histopathological examination.
