Vehicular movement on the historic Mughal Road in Jammu and Kashmir has been restored after a week-long disruption due to heavy snowfall, officials said on Monday.
The road provides an alternative to the Jammu–Srinagar highway, which frequently faces disruptions due to rain and snowfall.
Officials said the road was initially reopened partially on Sunday night, allowing only stranded vehicles from either side to pass through. On Monday morning, traffic movement was fully restored. The highway had been closed to vehicular traffic due to heavy snowfall, they said.
SSP (Traffic Rural) Farooq Qaisar confirmed the reopening, urging drivers to exercise caution, especially on high-altitude sections, amid treacherous conditions. He said the department will allow traffic to operate in a restricted window between 10:30 am and 2:30 pm only, to ensure safety and smooth flow.
He advised travellers to pay close attention, avoid non-essential trips, maintain lane discipline, and cooperate with traffic staff. The authorities will closely monitor the situation and issue prompt updates for public safety. The blockade on Mughal Road was caused by persistent snowfall in the higher reaches, which began on New Year’s Eve and continued till January 10.
