In a major step toward promoting renewable energy and improving living conditions in remote areas, the Tripura government has decided to install composite solar power units in 50 rural tribal hostels across the state, an official said on Tuesday. According to Subhasish Das, Director of the Tribal Welfare Department, the initiative aims to provide a steady supply of electricity in areas where conventional power access remains unreliable.

“The solar panels will not only provide lighting for the hostels but will also power pumps to lift water to overhead tanks,” Das explained. He added that each solar unit will cost between ₹48 lakh and ₹50 lakh and the project will be implemented by the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Authority (TREDA).

Das said funds have already been allocated to TREDA, which is expected to complete installation in 50 hostels within the next six months under the first phase of the project. “Once implemented, the initiative will ensure continuous and eco-friendly power in hostels located in interior tribal regions,” he added.

The official further revealed that the department also plans to expand the project to two Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) — one at Padmabil in Khowai district and another at Dumburnagar in Dhalai district.

“Since the cost of installation is around ₹1.5 crore per EMRS, the department has shortlisted these two institutions for the initial phase,” he said, adding, “The project underscores the state government’s commitment to sustainable development and inclusive growth by ensuring that students in remote tribal hostels have access to reliable electricity and water facilities.”
