Tripura has emerged as the top-performing state in the Northeast in implementing the PM-KUSUM scheme, a flagship programme promoting solar energy adoption in the agricultural sector.
Chief Minister Manik Saha said the recognition reflects the state government’s “unwavering commitment to promoting clean energy, rural empowerment, and sustainable development.” The scheme, spearheaded by the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Authority (TREDA), provides highly subsidised solar-powered pumps to farmers, replacing diesel-run ones to cut irrigation costs and reduce pollution.
“It is a shining example of sustainable progress! Tripura has secured the first position among all northeastern states in implementing the PM-KUSUM scheme,” Saha wrote on social media.

Under the scheme, farmers benefit from reduced expenditure on irrigation and contribute to the wider adoption of renewable energy in agriculture, a crucial step toward reducing carbon emissions in rural India.
The chief minister said, “Today, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath ji received the prestigious award from Union Minister for Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi ji during the Regional Workshop held in Guwahati.” Power Secretary Abhishek Singh and TREDA’s Joint Director Debasish Sukladas were also present at the event.
The recognition marks a major stride for Tripura, where the state government has actively promoted solar energy initiatives to empower farmers and ensure long-term sustainability in the agricultural sector.
