Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay has been booked by the Peravallur police in Chennai for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during a recent election campaign in Perambur. Along with him, nearly 5,000 party workers have also been mentioned in the case.

The action follows a complaint filed by Assistant Election Accounts Officer Kumar, who accused Vijay of breaching election norms by using around 30 loudspeakers, organising a gathering of over 5,000 people without permission, blocking an ambulance route, and causing inconvenience to the public.

Based on the complaint, the Peravallur police registered a case under multiple sections, including charges related to public nuisance, obstruction of public pathways, and unlawful assembly. Election Commission officials stated that permission had been granted only for a limited campaign involving 500 participants and the use of five loudspeakers. They also clarified that no approval had been given for conducting a roadshow.

The development comes in the wake of Vijay’s roadshow held on Monday ahead of filing his nomination from Perambur for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The large turnout during the event led to the alleged violations.

Meanwhile, TVK has submitted a petition to the Chief Electoral Officer, alleging that the Chennai Police failed to provide adequate security and traffic regulation during Vijay’s campaign. The party claimed that despite obtaining formal permission, the absence of police protection created an unsafe environment and hindered the movement of the campaign vehicle.

In a statement shared on social media, TVK urged the Election Commission to intervene, alleging biased actions by the police. The party further claimed that officials were acting in collusion with the ruling DMK to obstruct its campaign activities. It also alleged that while permission for open-vehicle campaigning was denied to Vijay, similar approvals were granted to DMK leader MK Stalin.

TVK has called on the Election Commission to take immediate action against officials responsible for what it described as one-sided enforcement and to ensure adequate security and traffic arrangements for its campaign.

Vijay is contesting from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East constituencies, where he will face DMK candidates R.D. Sekar and Inigo S Irudayaraj, respectively. Perambur was historically a CPI(M) stronghold until 2016, with Sekar holding the seat since winning a bypoll in 2019.

Tamil Nadu is scheduled to go to the polls in a single phase on April 23 across all 234 constituencies, with counting of votes set to take place on May 4.
