The wife of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor-turned-politician Vijay has filed for divorce in a family court in Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, alleging adultery and seeking dissolution of their 26-year marriage.

Sankgeetha Sornalingam, a Sri Lankan Tamil raised in the United Kingdom and a UK citizen, married Vijay in the UK on July 7, 1998. A ceremonial wedding was later held in Chennai. The couple have two children, aged 25 and 20.

In her petition, Sankgeetha has sought dissolution of marriage under Sections 27(1)(a), (b) and (d), read with Sections 36 and 37 of the Special Marriage Act, 1954. In addition to divorce, she has sought residence rights, permanent alimony and other appropriate reliefs.

The plea alleges that Vijay is involved in an extramarital relationship with a female actor. According to the petition, despite initial assurances that he would end the alleged relationship, it continued, causing her “deep emotional pain and mental suffering.”

“The marriage has broken down irretrievably and is incapable of revival. The petitioner cannot continue in a relationship that has become a constant source of mental agony, indignity, humiliation and suffering,” the petition states.

The filing further alleges that financial restrictions were imposed on Sankgeetha and that her movements were curtailed. It claims that Vijay continued to publicly associate with the actor, including travelling abroad and attending public events together.

Social media posts relating to these appearances, including those shared by the actor, allegedly caused repeated humiliation to Sankgeetha and their children, the petition states.

While the plea refers to the alleged relationship, it does not name the actor at this stage, stating that it seeks to avoid unnecessary publicity. However, it reserves the right to implead her during the course of proceedings if required.

The matter is expected to come up for further hearing before the family court in Chengalpattu.
