The tragic death of Noida resident Twisha Sharma at her marital home in Bhopal has sparked a bitter controversy, with her family accusing her husband and in-laws of prolonged physical and mental abuse, dowry harassment, and using their considerable legal influence to subvert the investigation.

The 31-year-old, who was approximately two months pregnant, was found hanging at her residence in the Katara Hills area of Bhopal on the night of May 12. She had married Samarth Singh, a Bhopal-based lawyer and the son of retired sessions judge Giribala Singh, in December 2025, after the pair met via a dating application the previous year. Although local police are currently treating the incident as a suspected suicide, Twisha’s family alleges foul play, asserting she was under immense distress in the months preceding her death. The case has rapidly escalated into a politically and legally sensitive matter, plagued by accusations that the well-connected accused family attempted to compromise the integrity of the proceedings.

According to police reports, Twisha was discovered hanging and her husband and mother-in-law rushed her to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. Authorities were alerted by hospital staff at around 11 pm; no suicide note was recovered from the premises. Investigators noted that Twisha had been in contact with her family until about 10 pm that evening, and relatives claimed she had expressed an urgent desire to leave Bhopal and return to Noida just hours before her death. Meanwhile, CCTV footage recovered by investigators showed Twisha walking towards the rooftop shortly before the incident, and later being carried downstairs by her husband and two others.

There is a disturbing gap in the investigation of the murder case of Twisha Sharma. This is because the call for justice regarding the murder goes from Delhi all the way up to Bhopal, and throughout the whole country. Based on the findings of the forensic pathologists from AIIMS Bhopal, the belt suspected of being used by the Noida girl in hanging herself at the matrimonial house in Bhopal was not presented by the investigating police for the autopsy process.

Because of this absence of important evidence, it became difficult for the doctors to connect the supposed ligature material with the bruise marks in the neck area of the dead woman.

On the other hand, in response to the complaints filed against Twisha’s husband and mother-in-law by the latter’s relatives, the police have booked them under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita due to the provisions regarding the dowry death and harassment. A cash prize of Rs. 10,000 has been offered by the Bhopal Police to help locate Samarth Singh who is still not apprehended till date. To conduct a comprehensive investigation, a Special Investigation Team comprising of six people has been formed to examine different aspects such as physical abuse, harassment and destruction of evidence at the scene. Dissatisfied with the results of the preliminary investigations, Twisha’s relatives want another post-mortem conducted under court supervision because of visible injuries on her body.

The grieving family initially refused to perform her last rites, demanding immediate and stringent action against her in-laws, whom they accuse of relentless harassment over her career choices and her pregnancy. On Sunday, family members staged a protest outside Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav's residence, demanding a fresh post-mortem at AIIMS Delhi. During the demonstration, her father, Navnidhi Sharma, warned that he would immolate himself outside the residence if justice was denied, though he and his son were later assured of a fair investigation by officials from the Chief Minister's Office. The family has also pleaded for her body to be preserved properly at minus 4 degrees Celsius to prevent decomposition ahead of any further medical examination.

The case has drawn widespread scrutiny after Twisha’s father publicly questioned how the accused family’s legal background might be influencing judicial outcomes. While the retired judge, Giribala Singh, secured anticipatory bail on Friday, a Bhopal court rejected a similar pre-arrest bail plea filed by her son. Speaking to the press, Twisha’s father expressed dismay over the ease with which an accused could secure relief before a trial even commenced, alleging that the law was treating individuals based on their societal reputation and warning that such decisions set a dangerous precedent.

The leaked WhatsApp messages that have been accessed by the press portray a bleak picture of how Twisha lived within her matrimonial home since she frequently consulted her mother about her agony. One particular message she sent before committing suicide was that she was totally suffocated. The chat logs indicate she felt emotionally trapped and deeply questioned why she had been sent to Bhopal in the first place. In other messages, she described her life as a living hell, alleging that her in-laws were highly suspicious of her and that her husband had even questioned the paternity of her unborn child. Her final known communication was an Instagram message to a friend, Minakshi, sent shortly before her death, in which she wrote that she was trapped and warned her friend to stay safe.

Conversely, Judge Giribala Singh who has retired recently has categorically rejected all charges of abuse in an anticipatory bail application. On the contrary, she argued that Twisha had mental problems like drug addiction and was emotionally unstable due to which she would tremble when not allowed to use drugs. Singh alleged that Twisha's father had previously acknowledged these issues. Furthermore, during a press conference held after her son’s bail was rejected, the retired judge asserted that her daughter-in-law had taken abortion pills against the explicit wishes of the family, and maintained that Twisha had taken her own life by hanging herself from iron rods on the terrace.

Twisha’s family has fiercely rejected these claims as a malicious attempt to defame the deceased. Before her marriage, Twisha Sharma was a highly accomplished 33-year-old MBA graduate who had forged a successful career in marketing and communications in Delhi. Known for her creative pursuits, she was a former Miss Pune and had featured in the Telugu film Mugguru Monagallu. In addition to her professional career, she had been certified as a yoga trainer and was known to be a keen follower of Vipassana meditation, which apparently contradicts what her in-laws are trying to convey about her.
