Two men were booked for reportedly using Virtual Private Network (VPN) applications on their cell phones in violation of orders issued by the Doda district administration in Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Sunday.

The action followed strict enforcement of prohibitory orders issued by the Doda district magistrate, which ban the use of VPN services in the district on security grounds.

The accused have been identified as Khalid Abrar and Mohd Irfan, the police said.

A police team from the Bhagla Bharth post was on routine patrol duty on Saturday when it noticed Abrar using a VPN application on his cell phone, a police spokesperson said.

When questioned, Abrar was not able to give a satisfactory explanation and was subsequently detained, the spokesperson said, adding that a cognisable report was forwarded to the Doda police station, resulting in the registration of an FIR.

In a similar incident, Irfan, a resident of Tendla village in Chilli, was spotted at Shali Pul in Gandoh using a VPN application in violation of the prohibitory orders.
An FIR has been registered against Irfan at the Gandoh police station, and further investigation is underway, the spokesperson said.

The police appealed to the public to strictly follow the orders issued by the district administration and cooperate with the police in maintaining law and order.
