Two police constables were suspended for alleged negligence of duty after they reportedly kept heroin seized from a private hotel last week and sought money from the accused, officials stated on Wednesday.
The constables, who were posted at Bhoranj police station in Hamirpur district, have been shifted to the police lines until further orders.
According to officials, the suspended constables had seized chitta, or adulterated heroin, from two persons at a private hotel. However, instead of registering an FIR, they allegedly kept the seized contraband in their own possession.
The constables are also accused of demanding money from the two individuals from whom the drug was recovered. After learning about the incident, Hamirpur Superintendent of Police Balbir Singh ordered their suspension, officials added.
Additional Superintendent of Police Rajesh Sharma, who is conducting the probe, said disciplinary action was initiated immediately after the matter came to light and negligence in duty was confirmed.
