Two brothers have been apprehended in connection with the blast at an illegal firecracker manufacturing unit in Jodhan village of Ludhiana that left one person dead and injured two others, police said on Wednesday.

The accused have been identified as Sazid and Wazid, who were allegedly operating the illegal firecracker unit, officials added.

Police said the two brothers belong to Muzaffarnagar district in Uttar Pradesh. A search operation is underway to trace their third brother, who is also suspected to be involved.

According to Deputy Inspector General Satinder Singh, the accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Explosives Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A large quantity of firecrackers was seized from the building located near Hambran, about 25 kilometres from Ludhiana city.

The explosion took place on Tuesday evening, and the impact of the blast caused the roof of the building to collapse.

Kaif Shah (19), an employee working at the unit, died in the incident. The injured girl, Alisha, is reported to be stable in hospital, while another injured person, Zamil, was discharged after receiving first aid.

Police said the exact cause of the blast is yet to be confirmed. Preliminary findings indicate that a spark or frictional heat may have ignited stored potash. Forensic experts are examining the site to determine the exact cause.
