At least two people were killed after the vehicle they were travelling in skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in Reasi district’s Dharangli Tote area on Tuesday morning, officials said.

The deceased have been identified as Mannu, son of Rattan Singh, and Jadev Singh, son of Balwan Singh, residents of Shoral village. The accident occurred  when the driver lost control of the vehicle on a hilly stretch of the road.

Officials said a rescue operation was immediately launched, and both bodies were retrieved from the gorge. A case has been registered and investigation is underway.

Mountainous roads in Jammu and Kashmir—including the Srinagar-Jammu national highway and several inter-district routes—have become death traps in recent weeks, with multiple fatal accidents reported.

On February 1, at least two people were killed and two others seriously injured when their vehicle skidded off the road and rolled down a hill in the Jandrola area of Sathra Mandi, Poonch district.

On January 27, a CRPF jawan was among four people killed when a bus lost control, struck a motorcycle, and collided with a parked load carrier near Jakhani-Chenani on the Jammu-Srinagar highway. The load carrier was under repair at the time, and the bus was travelling from Doda to Jammu.

On January 22, 10 Indian Army personnel were killed and 11 injured when their bulletproof Casspir vehicle skidded off the Bhaderwah–Chamba interstate road at Khanni Top (altitude approximately 9,000 feet) and plunged nearly 200 feet into a gorge. The vehicle was en route to a high-altitude post; inclement weather and icy roads were cited as the likely causes. The injured were airlifted to the Udhampur Command Hospital.
