The threat posed by wild elephants continues to escalate in Jharkhand, with two people killed and one seriously injured in separate incidents reported from Gumla and Koderma districts.

The recurring attacks have created an atmosphere of fear among villagers and raised concerns over the preparedness of the Forest Department.

In Gumla district, a tragic incident took place on Thursday morning in Sadan Bukma village under Rampur Panchayat in the Kurumgarh forest area of Chainpur block.

A 70-year-old man, Mahipal Lohra, had gone to collect mahua flowers in the nearby Mirchi Tangra area when a wild elephant suddenly emerged from the forest and attacked him.

He sustained severe injuries and collapsed on the spot. Following the incident, villagers and family members rushed to the scene, triggering panic in the area.

A Forest Department team, with the help of locals, shifted the injured man to the Community Health Centre in Chainpur. After initial treatment, he was referred to the Sadar Hospital in Gumla due to his critical condition.

In a separate incident in Koderma district on Wednesday night, an elephant wreaked havoc in Birhor Tola of the Mariampur area. The animal trampled a 55-year-old woman, Maniya Birhorni, to death.

Another woman, Aarti Birhorni, was injured in the attack and is currently undergoing treatment at the Sadar Hospital.

Villagers managed to drive the elephant away by raising an alarm. However, the animal later moved towards the Bonakali Women’s College area, where it attacked and killed a 40-year-old labourer, Baleshwar Soren, a resident of Deoghar district.

According to family members, Soren was asleep when the elephant suddenly entered his house, leading to panic and the fatal attack.
