Two police personnel in Betul district have been suspended for violating official protocols by making derogatory remarks in a character certificate issued to a local resident.
The incident came to light when Rupesh Deshmukh, the complainant, noticed that his certificate contained an objectionable remark labeling him a "habitual complainant with the CM helpline."
According to Betul Superintendent of Police (SP) Nischal N Jharia, the suspended officers – Head Constable Balram Sareyam and Constable Viplav Marase – were responsible for handling character certificate issuance and complaints to the CM helpline, respectively. Their actions were deemed inappropriate, leading to their immediate suspension.
Deshmukh, a resident of the Athner police station area, had applied for a character certificate as part of a work-related requirement. Facing an undue delay in the process, he escalated his grievance to the CM helpline, a state-level redressal forum.

Allegedly irked by the complaint, the police officers retaliated by issuing the certificate with the remark written in red ink, implying that Deshmukh frequently lodged complaints with the CM helpline. The certificate was officially issued on February 6, 2024.
Deshmukh, an employee of a private company, emphasised that he had never previously registered any complaints with the CM helpline. Upon realising the misconduct, he approached the authorities, who subsequently issued him a corrected character certificate.
The incident underscores the importance of fair administrative conduct and accountability in law enforcement. Authorities have assured a thorough review of the processes related to issuing character certificates to prevent similar violations in the future.
