Two men allegedly involved in several criminal cases in Rajasthan were apprehended following a gunfight with the police in Dehradun in the early hours of Thursday, officials said.
Police said the encounter took place after the suspects attempted to escape when their car crashed into a barricade near the Nayagaon police outpost. As police personnel chased the vehicle, the suspects reportedly abandoned it and opened fire while trying to flee. The police responded to the firing, officials said.
One of the accused suffered a gunshot wound to his leg during the exchange of fire and was taken into custody along with his associate.
According to police, three other individuals travelling in the vehicle escaped from the spot. Efforts are underway to trace and arrest them. The injured accused has been identified as Rinku Meena (30), a resident of Dausa district in Rajasthan. He is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
The second accused, Vinod Kumar Meena (32), belongs to Rajasthan's Karauli district, police said. During the operation, police seized country-made pistols, empty shells, and live cartridges from the accused. The Rajasthan-registered vehicle used by them has also been taken into custody.
Officials said both men have a criminal background and are facing several cases related to serious offences in Rajasthan.
