In an effort to control rising crime in Uttarakhand’s capital, the state government has launched ‘Operation Prahar’. The move comes after the recent killing of a retired brigadier on Mussoorie Road.
Retired Army officer Mukesh Joshi, who had gone for a morning walk on March 30, was reportedly caught in a gunfight between two groups and was shot dead. The incident triggered serious concerns over public safety in Dehradun.
Officials said the government has adopted a strict approach to curb illegal activities, particularly late-night crimes, and to act against unruly elements operating in the city.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and state Director General of Police Deepam Seth initiated the special drive aimed at restoring law and order in the capital. The operation focuses on tackling the recent rise in criminal incidents, including murders, shootings and violent clashes, by increasing police presence and strengthening accountability across the city.
The DGP issued directions on Tuesday night, stating that a high-level meeting was held at the police headquarters to review the prevailing law and order situation in Dehradun.
Senior officials, including Rajiv Swaroop, Nilesh Anand Bharne, Pramendra Singh Dobal, and Ajay Singh, attended the meeting to finalise strategies for implementing the operation.
During the meeting, Swaroop was assigned the responsibility of daily monitoring of law and order in Dehradun, while Dobal was directed to ensure strict policing and accountability in his jurisdiction.
Police circle officers and station house officers were instructed to remain highly active, especially during morning hours, with focused monitoring of crime-prone areas and intensified checking at various checkpoints.
Officials said the STF and senior police officers have been directed to launch a special crackdown on active criminal elements. Action will also be taken against bars and pubs operating beyond permitted closing hours.
Authorities have also ordered intensive verification drives of paying guests and tenants across the city, along with regular monitoring of homestays to prevent misuse.
Dehradun has witnessed several violent incidents over the past two to three months, including murders, firing incidents and physical altercations, prompting the administration to tighten law enforcement measures.
