Uttarakhand Police on Friday said that a video of suspended constable Sher Singh, who reportedly made a statement at Jantar Mantar in Delhi that has been circulating on social media, was "baseless" and alleged that he has a criminal history.
IG Kumaon Range Nivedita Kukreti said the constable had been unauthorisedly absent from duty in Pithoragarh district since June 28. According to the police, the SP Pithoragarh had issued him a notice, and after no response was received, he was suspended on July 20.
Kukreti further alleged that Sher Singh and another police colleague had been involved in organised crime in connivance with alleged gangster Praveen Valmiki. She claimed that the two had allegedly intimidated people and seized their land.
According to the IG, Sher Singh was arrested and sent to jail on January 15, 2025, and remained incarcerated for several months before being released on bail. She added that dismissal proceedings were also underway against him.
The police officer said necessary legal and departmental action was being taken in connection with the statement made by the suspended constable.
The remarks came after a video of Sher Singh from Jantar Mantar, where he reportedly announced his resignation from the Uttarakhand Police, was widely circulated on social media. The police said the allegations made by him were baseless.
