Sushma Devi was shot dead by her husband on Wednesday.

Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi's granddaughter, Sushma Devi, was allegedly shot dead by her husband in Bihar’s Gaya district on Wednesday, according to police officials. The incident occurred in Tetua village under Atri block, where Sushma was at home along with her children and sister, Poonam Kumari.

According to Poonam, the tragic event unfolded around noon when Sushma’s husband, Ramesh, returned home from work. An argument broke out between the couple, which escalated into violence. During the heated altercation, Ramesh reportedly pulled out a country-made pistol and fired at Sushma before fleeing the scene.

Sushma’s children and Poonam, who were in a different room at the time, rushed in upon hearing the gunshot and found her lying in a pool of blood. She had died instantly.

There has been no official response so far from Jitan Ram Manjhi, who is the sitting MP from the Gaya Lok Sabha constituency and currently serves as the Union Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. He is also the founder of the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular), a constituent party of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar.

As news of the incident spread, local villagers gathered at the house after hearing the gunfire. Poonam, in her statement, demanded the death penalty for her sister’s alleged killer, stating, "He came from Patna. We demand the death penalty for Ramesh. He should be hanged for killing my sister. My sister is no more."

Sushma worked as a "Vikas Mitra," a government-appointed liaison tasked with connecting state initiatives to marginalized communities under the Bihar Mahadalit Vikas Mission. Ramesh, her husband, worked as a truck driver based in Patna.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Gaya, Anand Kumar, confirmed that a special team has been constituted to track down the accused. Forensic experts and technical teams have been dispatched to the scene to collect evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.

Sources close to the family revealed that Sushma and Ramesh came from different castes and had been married for the past 14 years.
