A 36-year-old fugitive with a Rs 50,000 reward on his head was killed in a police encounter in Budhana early Thursday, officials said.
The deceased, identified as Amjad, was wanted in nearly 40 cases across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Bihar. A joint team from Budhana, Titavi, and Shahpur police stations launched an operation after receiving intelligence about his presence in the area.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar Verma, Amjad opened fire on the police during a vehicle check, prompting retaliatory firing. He was injured and rushed to the Community Health Centre in Budhana, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Police recovered a pistol, a motorcycle, looted documents, and a mobile phone from his possession. Two officers, Sub-Inspector Sandeep Kumar and Constable Ishfaq, were injured in the exchange but are reported to be stable.
Verma described the operation as a “major success,” highlighting the fugitive’s long criminal history, which included cases in Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Noida, Ghaziabad, Bihar, and Rajasthan.
