A couple in Uttarakhand tragically died from suffocation after sleeping with a bonfire burning in their room, officials confirmed on Friday.
The incident occurred on Thursday night in Dwari-Thapla village, located in the Bhilangana area. The couple, Madan Mohan Semwal (52) and his wife, Yashoda Devi (48), had travelled to the village to attend a wedding, according to village administrator Rinki Devi.
At around 11 pm, the couple lit a bonfire to combat the cold and placed it inside their closed room before going to sleep. On Friday morning, their son attempted to wake them, but there was no response.
When the door remained locked, locals forced it open and found the couple lifeless on the bed. Rinki Devi explained that the suffocation was caused by carbon monoxide poisoning from the smoke produced by the bonfire.
The police were not informed, as the villagers decided to handle the situation privately. After consulting the couple's son and daughter, the bodies were cremated at a nearby ghat. Madan Mohan Semwal worked as a clerk at the Government Inter College, Saraswatisain, the administrator added.
