Uttarakhand forests to thrive with bird-friendly flora

The initiative will primarily focus on the state's hilly regions and is being included in the department's 10-year action plan for the first time.

In a pioneering effort to improve avian habitats, the research division of Uttarakhand’s forest department has launched an ambitious initiative to cultivate trees, shrubs, and vines that serve as vital food sources for birds.

This initiative marks a significant advancement in the state’s commitment to biodiversity conservation, according to a spokesperson from the forest department.

The program will primarily focus on Uttarakhand’s hilly regions and is being incorporated into the department’s 10-year action plan for the first time. The Uttarakhand Forest Research Wing has initiated an extensive study to identify the specific tree, shrub, and vine species that birds rely on for sustenance.

Chief Conservator of Forests (Planning) Sanjeev Chaturvedi provided insights into the project, stating, “Our experts have conducted field studies in Mandal, a region in the Garhwal Himalayas. Observations revealed that the Himalayan ivy vine, found in cedar forests, attracts not just one or two, but as many as 10 different bird species, which also use these trees for nesting. Similarly, birds are drawn to species such as Buransh, Hisalu, Mehal, Tejpatta, Kilmoda, and Ghagra.”

Chaturvedi further emphasized that Uttarakhand is home to over 700 bird species, including approximately 30 that are classified as endangered.

“Until now, bird conservation efforts were not systematically included in our action plans. However, for the first time, we are making it a priority. Additionally, we have proposed regular surveys of identified bird conservation areas and other measures to protect avian biodiversity,” he added.

Forest officials believe that increasing the diversity of tree species will naturally support the growth of bird populations. The upcoming action plan will specifically list key tree and shrub species to ensure their targeted cultivation and long-term preservation.

Renowned ornithologist and bird expert Ajay Sharma, who has over three decades of experience in avian studies, highlighted the importance of native flora in bird conservation.

“Barbet species and hornbills play a crucial role in the forest ecosystem by assisting in the propagation of 50 to 70 different varieties of wild and common fruit-bearing plants,” Sharma explained.

He further suggested that the forest department should actively promote the planting of species such as Silver Oak, Semal, Indian Silk Cotton Tree, Indian Fig Tree, Kapoor Tree, and Ashoka Tree. “These trees are particularly preferred by birds, as they provide ideal nesting sites and abundant food resources,” Sharma stated.

This initiative, with its focus on ecological restoration and habitat enhancement, is expected to significantly contribute to the preservation of Uttarakhand’s rich avian diversity, ensuring a thriving environment for generations of birds to come.
