In a major breakthrough in the ongoing anti-extremism operations in Jharkhand, Ranchi Police have arrested Amrit Horo alias Mecho, chief of the banned extremist outfit People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI).

He was apprehended from the Lapung area of Ranchi district. The Jharkhand government had announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh on his arrest. Senior officials of Ranchi Police confirmed the development.

Horo had been on the police’s most-wanted list for a long time. Following sustained action against Maoist groups in Jharkhand, security agencies have intensified their crackdown on splinter extremist organisations as well.

According to police, Amrit Horo was involved in several serious criminal and extremist activities. A special team of Ranchi Police tracked his location using local intelligence inputs and prolonged surveillance before arresting him from Lapung.

After the arrest of PLFI chief Dinesh Gope by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the subsequent encounter of Martin Kerketta in Gumla, Amrit Horo had emerged as the top commander of the outfit.

He later took charge of the organisation and allegedly expanded extortion and criminal operations across Ranchi, Khunti and nearby districts.

Police officials said in recent months, he had been demanding levy from contractors, businessmen and local residents in several districts, creating an atmosphere of fear in the affected areas.

Amrit Horo is currently being interrogated by Ranchi Police. Officials believe the questioning could reveal crucial information about other extremists linked to the organisation and its operational network.
