Leaders and supporters of Akali Dal Waris Punjab De held a protest in Chandigarh on Wednesday, calling for the release of party MP Amritpal Singh and other Sikh detainees.
Police deployed a large force in the area and placed barricades near the Chandigarh-Mohali border to prevent the protesters from moving further into the city. The protesters raised slogans seeking the release of Amritpal Singh and other Sikh prisoners.
Police used water cannons to disperse the demonstrators as the protest intensified. During the protest, one of the party workers was also seen climbing onto a water cannon vehicle.
Amritpal Singh is currently lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam. He was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) after being arrested on April 23, 2023.
Before returning to Punjab in 2022, Amritpal had lived in Dubai. He returned to the state following the death of Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu and later took charge of Waris Punjab De, an organisation founded by Sidhu.
Amritpal was arrested from Rode village in Moga district after he and his supporters protested at the Ajnala police station on February 23, 2023. The protesters had allegedly clashed with police while seeking the release of one of his aides, who had been arrested over inflammatory and alleged pro-Khalistan statements.
His detention under the NSA has since been extended twice. The first extension came in April 2024, followed by another in April 2025.
Following the latest extension of his detention in April 2025, Amritpal Singh approached the Supreme Court challenging the order.
