The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has predicted heavy rain and snowfall across Jammu and Kashmir starting this evening, with higher reaches likely to receive heavy snowfall over the next 48 hours.
According to the forecast, light rain will begin over the plains from Monday afternoon and intensify towards the evening, accompanied by widespread snowfall in higher reaches and remote areas.
Intermittent rainfall has continued over the past week, with occasional snowfall recorded in the upper reaches.
Last week, a fresh snowfall-triggered avalanche near Zojila Pass claimed seven lives and left several others injured after multiple vehicles were buried under debris. A spell of rainfall after nearly two months of dry weather had earlier raised concerns among the farming community.
Authorities have issued travel advisories, urging people to avoid travelling to upper reaches, dangerous slopes and areas prone to avalanches. Heavy to very heavy snowfall is expected over most upper reaches in the Kashmir Valley.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast severe weather activity across J&K and parts of north India over the next 24 hours. Weather alerts have been issued for Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and New Delhi.
