Weather conditions across Jammu and Kashmir have improved after widespread snowfall lashed most parts of the Valley on Friday. The weather in the Kashmir Valley cleared on Saturday; however, snowfall continued in several districts of the Jammu division, prompting authorities to issue advisories for residents, particularly in Doda district.
According to independent weather observers, the weather is likely to remain dry for the next 48 hours before another weather system approaches from Monday, bringing further rain and snowfall to parts of the Valley.
The Meteorological Department has issued avalanche advisories for six districts following heavy snowfall in North, South, and Central Kashmir, as well as in the Chenab Valley, Pir Panjal ranges, and parts of the Jammu division.
Officials stated, “Avalanches with a high danger level are likely above 2,300 metres in Ganderbal district over the next 24 hours.”
Similar avalanche warnings have been issued for areas above 2,500 metres elevation in Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, Ramban, and the northern district of Kupwara. Residents in avalanche-prone areas have been advised to stay indoors for the next 24 hours.
The Kashmir Valley is now in the final phase of Chillai-Kalan, the harshest 40-day winter period traditionally associated with heavy snowfall. Friday’s snowfall has transformed Kashmir into a winter wonderland, bringing much-needed relief to the local population—especially the farming community—after long-awaited precipitation.
Meanwhile, fresh snowfall was reported on Friday in higher reaches, including popular tourist destinations such as Gurez, Drass, Zojila, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Doodpathri, where most areas received heavy accumulations.
The MeT office in Srinagar has forecast fresh rain and snowfall from January 26 across widespread areas, including the plains.
