Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a public rally in Barrackpore, North 24 Parganas, on Monday, marking the final day of campaigning ahead of the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly election scheduled for April 29. Speaking amid intense heat and a charged political atmosphere, Modi expressed strong confidence in the BJP’s prospects in the state.

“Visiting Bengal this time evokes a distinct and unique feeling within me. Despite the scorching heat, I feel no fatigue. This is my last rally in Bengal election. I will return from Bengal with the conviction that I will be back again on the day of the oath-taking ceremony after May 4,” Modi said, asserting that the BJP is poised to form the next government in West Bengal.

The Prime Minister said he was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of the crowds that gathered during his rallies and roadshows across the state. “I could never have imagined receiving such an outpouring of love. These did not feel like mere roadshows, but sacred pilgrimages,” he remarked, adding that the mood of the people indicated a decisive shift in favour of the BJP.

Highlighting his long political journey, Modi said he has spent decades travelling across the country and finds fulfillment in being among the people. “You — the people — are my family,” he said.

Emphasising the importance of eastern India in the country’s growth, Modi stated that the development of regions such as Bihar (“Anga”), Odisha (“Kalinga”), and Bengal (“Banga”) is crucial. He noted that Bihar and Odisha already have “double-engine” governments and said Bengal’s turn has now come.

In a sharp attack on the TMC, Modi accused the ruling party of abandoning its core slogan of “Ma, Mati, Manush.” He alleged that despite being in power for 15 years, the party has failed to ensure the safety of women or deliver meaningful development. “Having nothing to show, they have resorted to abuses and falsehoods,” he said.

The Prime Minister further accused the TMC of corruption and of undermining institutions, including the armed forces, the Constitution, and the judiciary. He also alleged that the state has witnessed intimidation and lawlessness under its rule, adding that the party has not presented any credible report card of its governance.

Monday marks the culmination of campaigning for the second phase of polling, with several top leaders in the fray. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is also campaigning in the state, while Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee have multiple engagements scheduled across constituencies.

Polling for the second phase will take place across 142 constituencies in South Bengal, including Kolkata, making it a crucial leg in the ongoing electoral battle.
