Five days after a married woman was critically hurt while resisting a rape attempt by a 14-year-old boy, she died at a hospital here. Police said on Saturday that the accused has been arrested.
The incident occurred on November 3 in a village in Hamirpur district. After the attack, the 40-year-old woman was rushed to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) in Chandigarh for treatment.
The police said the woman was cutting grass in a nearby field when a Class 9 boy forcibly grabbed her and tried to sexually assault her. When she resisted, he attacked her brutally with a stick and a sickle, leaving her seriously injured.
Villagers later found her lying in the field, bleeding heavily. They immediately informed the police, who took her to Hamirpur Medical College for treatment. She was later referred to PGI Chandigarh.
Police recovered pieces of a broken pen and a scale from the spot. During questioning, the accused confessed to the crime.
Evidence collected from the scene indicates that the assault was committed with the intention of sexual violence. A case has been registered under relevant sections.
The police further said the 14-year-old boy has been taken into custody.
