Women victim tied to electric pole.

A shocking incident of mob violence unfolded in Punjab’s Patiala district, where a woman was tied to a pole and brutally assaulted by members of a local family. According to police reports on Sunday, the attack stemmed from allegations that the woman’s 18-year-old son had eloped with the family’s daughter-in-law, a mother of two.

The disturbing incident took place on April 4 in Jansuha village, and a video capturing the assault quickly went viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage.

The woman, who is in her late forties, filed a police complaint stating that she was intercepted by the family while on her way somewhere. She was forcibly tied to a pole, beaten, and her clothes torn by the enraged members of the household who were demanding to know the whereabouts of her son.

Despite her repeated pleas and insistence that she had no knowledge of her son's location, the attackers continued their assault. The woman even offered to cooperate in locating her son, but her appeals fell on deaf ears. Eventually, police arrived at the scene and rescued her from further harm.

Following the incident, the police registered a case at the Sadar Police Station in Rajpura. Two suspects identified as Kuldeep and Bittu have been arrested, and authorities are continuing efforts to apprehend the remaining individuals involved.

Taking swift notice of the viral video and media coverage, the Punjab State Women Commission intervened, with chairperson Raj Lali Gill taking suo motu cognizance of the case. She directed the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Patiala to submit a detailed action-taken report by April 7.

Under Section 12 of the Punjab State Women Commission Act, 2001, the Commission has asked a police officer of Superintendent of Police (SP) rank to lead a thorough investigation. Gill assured the public that strict legal action will be taken against all those found guilty of physically assaulting or intimidating the woman.

"The Commission will not tolerate any form of intimidation, harassment, or violation of women’s rights," Gill stated, emphasising that justice will be ensured and such acts of mob violence will not be allowed to recur.
