Traffic on the Yamunotri Highway has been halted at several locations, including Syana Chatti, due to debris and stones falling amidst continuous rainfall in the Yamunotri Valley since midnight. Ongoing rain is also hampering efforts to clear the road. Meanwhile, boulders have also fallen on the Karnaprayag-Simli route.
The highway was obstructed once again when debris entered the Tharalibagar market in Narayanbagar; the BRO cleared the debris and reopened the road on Monday morning. Debris washed down by the rain entered several shops, and some also reached the government ration warehouse. Waterlogging has occurred due to debris spreading across the highway near the hospital and the Jeet Singh Market area. Additionally, power supply in Karnaprayag has been disrupted since Sunday night.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Uttarakhand on Monday. The Meteorological Centre has issued a 'red alert' for heavy to very heavy rain. Meanwhile, the Flash Flood Guidance Cell of the Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding the risk of flash floods in various parts of several districts over the next 24 hours.
The Meteorological Department has warned that rainfall over the next 24 hours could lead to a rapid increase in surface runoff in areas where the soil is already fully saturated. Furthermore, waterlogging issues may arise in low-lying areas.
In view of the 'red alert' for rain, the district administrations have ordered the closure of schools in 11 districts—including Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Haridwar, Dehradun, and Tehri. All anganwadi centers and schools (Classes 1 to 12) will remain closed.
