The Uttarakhand SDRF conducts a night rescue operation after a youth fell into a gorge near Gaurikund on the Kedarnath route.

The Uttarakhand State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rescued a young man who fell into a deep gorge along the Kedarnath trekking route on Wednesday night, officials said.

The accident took place near Chhodi, about two kilometres ahead of Gaurikund. The District Emergency Operations Centre (DEOC) in Rudraprayag alerted the SDRF late on July 15 and sought immediate help for the rescue operation.

An SDRF team from the Gaurikund post, led by Team Commander Ashish Dimri, rushed to the location with rescue equipment. The team worked with the local police, the District Disaster Response Force (DDRF) and YMF personnel to search for the injured man despite the darkness.

Facing steep slopes and difficult weather, the rescue team carefully climbed down into the gorge and reached the injured youth. They safely brought him out and shifted him to Gaurikund.

The man was given first aid at the spot before being taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment. Officials identified the rescued youth as Mohit Rawat, a resident of Badasu village in Rudraprayag district.

The Kedarnath trekking route is currently witnessing a large number of pilgrims. SDRF teams have been deployed at vulnerable locations along the route to respond quickly to emergencies during the monsoon season.

The Char Dham Yatra began on April 19 with traditional rituals at the shrines. The annual pilgrimage to Kedarnath Temple also started with the ceremonial departure of Lord Kedarnath's Panchmukhi palanquin from the Omkareshwar Temple, its winter abode.

The Uttarakhand Police have put in place extensive security and traffic arrangements to ensure the safe and smooth movement of pilgrims throughout the Yatra.
