YSRCP leader and ex-minister Merugu Nagarjuna on Sunday denounced the TDP-government's claimed attempt at "forcible acquisition" of 8,000 acres in Karedu village of Prakasam district. Nagarjuna asserted that the government is proceeding with land acquisitions without public approval, endangering farmers' livelihood for the sake of industrialisation.
"Forcibly taking lands of farmers without their consent is not just unacceptable but will also set a bad precedent," the YSRCP leader stated while addressing a media conference. He threatened that it may result in grave unrest.
Nagarjuna asserted that during the last YSRCP government, all the land purchases were carried out with the consent of farmers and openness and their interests never got jeopardised. He asked why new territories are being purchased when already distributed plots are lying idle, suggesting there could be large-scale accounting malpractices involved in the exercise.

"Why send new notifications when thousands of acres are available idle? What's the actual reason for this hasty step?" he questioned, raising serious apprehensions. He claimed that the YSRCP would never compromise on threats or intimidation against farmers and is willing to stage statewide agitations to protect their land and livelihood".
The former minister demanded the NDA government drop plans purportedly aimed at fertile land and called for complete openness and public sanction before going ahead with any acquisition move. "The government's behavior is meant to stir up conflicts and destabilise rural society," Nagarjuna accused, pointing out that such policies betray an attitude of disdain for people's well-being. The ruling TDP was not available for an immediate comment.
