BJP national president Nitin Nabin on Saturday accused previous Congress governments in Assam of turning the Barak Valley into a “crime hub” through vote-bank politics and appeasement of infiltrators, as campaigning intensified ahead of the assembly elections.

Addressing a poll rally in support of a candidate from Ram Krishna Nagar, Nabin alleged that the Congress prioritised appeasement over the welfare of local residents. “Previous governments had turned Barak Valley into a crime hub for vote bank politics. The politics of appeasement was at its peak as Congress governments were more concerned about infiltrators than the local people,” he said.

The BJP leader asserted that the electorate had already rejected such policies, pointing to the party’s victory in the previous election. He said the people of Assam had punished Congress by voting it out of power and placing their trust in a BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government with a clear developmental vision.

Expressing confidence ahead of the April 9 polls, Nabin said the NDA would return to power with a “massive mandate”, citing what he described as improved governance and a stronger law-and-order framework under the current dispensation.

Highlighting the party’s governance plank, he said the BJP had pursued “Virasat-vikash” — a blend of heritage preservation and development — during its tenure. According to him, the government has succeeded in curbing crime in southern Assam, including the Barak Valley region.

“No criminal dares to trouble the people anymore as they know that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will not spare anyone,” Nabin said, underscoring the administration’s approach to law enforcement.

He also listed various development initiatives undertaken over the past decade, maintaining that infrastructure, welfare delivery and security had improved under BJP rule. The party, he said, remains committed to sustaining this trajectory if re-elected.

The remarks come amid a sharp political contest in Assam, with parties intensifying their campaigns across key constituencies. The Barak Valley, comprising three districts in southern Assam, remains politically significant due to its demographic profile and electoral weight.

Elections to the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly are scheduled for April 9, with the counting of votes set for May 4.
