AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi will campaign in Assam on April 2 and 3 in support of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and its chief Badruddin Ajmal ahead of the Assembly elections, signalling a political understanding between the two parties.
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has decided to extend support to the AIUDF, with Owaisi scheduled to address several public meetings across the state, including rallies for Ajmal, who is contesting from the Binnakandi constituency.
The development follows recent interactions between the two leaders. Ajmal’s son, Abdul Rahman Ajmal, a former MLA, met Owaisi at his residence on Thursday, while the AIMIM chief also held a telephonic conversation with the AIUDF leader, sources indicated.
Earlier efforts to formalise a seat-sharing arrangement between the two parties for the Assam polls did not materialise. However, the decision to campaign jointly suggests a coordinated attempt to consolidate support.

The move comes amid AIUDF’s declining electoral fortunes. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the party failed to secure any seat, with Ajmal suffering a significant defeat in Dhubri. The party has also witnessed erosion in its traditional support base, particularly among Bengali Muslim voters, with sections shifting allegiance to the Congress.
In addition, several AIUDF legislators have defected to other parties in recent years. The party currently has 15 members in the outgoing Assam Assembly, compared to its best performance of 18 seats in the 2011 elections.
The AIMIM’s decision to campaign in Assam follows its recent outreach in eastern India, including support extended in West Bengal to regional political formations.
With polling for the 126-member Assam Assembly scheduled for April 9, political parties have intensified their campaign efforts, with alliances and strategic partnerships emerging as key factors in the electoral contest.
