Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said Assam had endured a prolonged period of instability but had witnessed a transformation over the past decade, attributing the change to sustained peace efforts by the BJP-led “double-engine” government, while addressing booth-level party workers ahead of the Assembly elections.

Speaking during the ‘Mera Booth, Sabse Mazboot Samvaad’ outreach, the Prime Minister said 12 peace agreements had been signed with various organisations in the Northeast as part of efforts to stabilise the region and ensure long-term development.

“We have seen the era when Assam was burning in violence. Assam saw a long span of instability, but things have changed in the past decade. But today, we can see a new confidence as the BJP's double-engine government has made every effort for peace,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister criticised the Congress, alleging that agreements during its tenure were “only on paper” and aimed at generating headlines. “No agreement with insurgents and student organisations worked during the Congress rule in Assam. The Congress betrayed the Bodo cause,” he said.

He asserted that the BJP government had focused on implementing accords sincerely. “The BJP worked to establish peace and secure the future of the youth. We are sincerely implementing peace agreements on the ground. Assam has witnessed how peace has been established through honest efforts in the past decade,” PM Modi added.

Addressing party workers, Modi described himself as a “karyakarta” and urged grassroots mobilisation ahead of the polls. “I welcome the karyakartas of Assam BJP. I am a karyakarta like you. Whatever responsibility is given to me, I fulfil that duty,” he said, encouraging booth-level workers to strengthen the party’s outreach.

He also called on party cadres to engage first-time voters by highlighting what he termed as the “misrule” of previous Congress governments and cautioned that complacency could reverse gains made in the state.

“Peace is the primary requirement for a state's development,” the Prime Minister underlined.

PM Modi further warned against misinformation, asking workers to remain alert to AI-generated videos circulating in Assam and to caution the public against being misled.

Elections to the 126-member Assam Assembly are scheduled for April 9, with the BJP-led NDA seeking a third consecutive term in the state, where it has been in power since 2016.
