In the upcoming Haryana assembly elections, political parties are intensifying their efforts across seven key belts of the state that shape the state’s political landscape.
However, there are three major belts, Ahirwal, Bangar-Bagad, and GT Road Belt, each representing its unique political dynamics and issues.
In the Ahirwal belt, key political figures include Union Minister Rao Inderjit, who has remained MP for four terms, and influential Congress leaders like Abhay Singh Yadav, Captain Ajay Yadav, Ram Bilas Sharma, Rao Dan Singh, and Rao Narbir all belong to this belt.
However there are major issues faced by the people in this belt, water scarcity being the primary concern for the area bordering Rajasthan. The region has inadequate canal irrigation, making the land barren.
Despite BJP’s efforts under CM Manohar Lal’s tenure to supply water, demands remain unmet.
The area includes parts of the districts Mahendragarh, Rewari, Gurgaon, Jhajjar, Charkhi Dadri, among others.
The second most important belt of this region is the Bangar Belt which covers areas in Hisar, Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, Sirsa, and Fatehabad.
Four former Chief Ministers of the state belonged to the belt, including Tau Devi Lal.
Current influential leaders include Kuldeep Bishnoi from the Bhajan Lal family, Kiran Chaudhary from the Bansi Lal family, and Dushyant Chautala, Ajay Singh, and Abhay Chautala from the Chautala family.
The area also includes the Uchana seat.
The belt has historically been involved in state politics but has seen very little development.
Notable figures include Birendra Singh and Randeep Surjewala, though neither has become the head of the state.
The GT road belt includes Ambala, Kurukshetra, Karnal, Yamunanagar, Panipat and Sonepat.
According to reports, the BJP is eying all 25 constituencies under this area. Starting strategically from Kurukshetra and making a gateway to Haryana for the third time. The belt belongs to the non-jat voters, almost 80%.
The belt has been a stronghold of the BJP since 2014. The party won 23 seats in the belt which added to their overall victory in the state.
CM Saini is contesting from Ladwa, Kurukshetra.
However, other belts hold equal importance in the state.
The South of the Haryana belt includes Gurugram, Faridabad, and Palwal.
The belt majorly faces issues of water shortage, crime, and waterlogging in Gurugram.
However, this belt benefits heavily from Delhi and significant industrial investment.
Prominent figures include Union Minister of State Krishna Pal Gurjar, former Industries Minister Vipul Goyal, ex-MP Avtar Singh Bhadana, and Karan Singh Dalal.
Further south, lays the Muslim-dominated belt, called The Mewat belt. The area includes Nuh and adjacent Muslim-majority areas, struggling with low education levels, poor infrastructure, and high crime rates.
The Jat-dominated Deswali belt covers Rohtak, Sonipat, Jhajjar, and Panipat, and is known for its strong political presence.
This area witnessed significant progress under former Chief Minister Bhupendra Singh Hooda.
Key political figures include Bhupendra Singh Hooda, Deependra Hooda, Captain Abhimanyu, Manish Grover, and Omprakash Dhankhar.
Last but not least, the Khadar-Nardak Belt is a fertile region that includes Karnal, Kurukshetra, Ambala, Yamunanagar, and Panchkula.
It suffers from recurring floods along the Yamuna, Tangri, and Markanda Rivers, leading to crop failures and disrupted livelihoods.
Political influence here includes former Chief Ministers Manohar Lal and Naib Singh Saini, both from Karnal.
