Three suspects allegedly involved in the brutal murder of Bangladeshi ruling Awami League lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar have been remanded into eight-day police custody by a Bangladesh court.
Anar, a three-time parliamentarian and president of Awami League's Kaliganj sub-district unit, vanished during a personal visit to Kolkata, India, on May 12 for medical treatment.
The Kolkata police reported circumstantial evidence suggesting Anar was strangled before his body was dismembered and scattered across various locations.
On the other hand, Bangladesh authorities apprehended three individuals in connection with the murder.
Identified as Tanvir, Shimul Bhuiyan, and Silisti Rahman, they appeared before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Dilruba Afroz Tithi, where police requested a 10-day remand.
Following the hearing, the court granted an eight-day police remand for the trio.
According to Bangladesh police, Bhuiyan, a purported leader of the outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party, assumed the alias Amanullah and procured a counterfeit passport to facilitate the killing in Kolkata and evade law enforcement.
Investigations revealed the murder was premeditated, with planning meetings held months prior at residences in Gulshan and Bashundhara, allegedly owned by mastermind and MP's confidant, Aktaruzzaman Shahin.
Shahin, a Bangladeshi-American citizen, reportedly fled to Nepal post the murder.
A West Bengal CID team visited Bangladesh to interrogate the suspects, while Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubul Haque set a July 4 deadline for the probe report.
Anar's daughter, Mumtarin Ferdous Dorin, filed the case, and the investigation continues.
Meanwhile, A court in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas District on Friday remanded Jihad Hawaldar, the accused in the Bangladesh MP murder case, to 12 days of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) custody.
Hawaldar, an illegal immigrant from Bangladesh, confessed to CID that he was recruited and transported from Mumbai to Kolkata for the crime.
He claimed involvement in both the murder and disposal of the Bangladeshi MP's body.
Presented before the court on Friday afternoon, the CID requested custody, citing the potential for crucial leads in the ongoing investigation.
CID sources revealed that their team in Bangladesh discovered Hawaldar faces murder charges there too.
Hawaldar's recruitment was based on his proficiency as a butcher, skilled in skinning and flesh-mincing.
Despite extensive searches, no traces of his body or body parts have been located.
"The suspect during the investigation has coughed out the name of Anar's friend Akhtaruzzaman, a US citizen and close associate of the MP, who purportedly financed the crime with around Rs 5 crore," an official informed.
Hawladar, a professional butcher, is a resident of Barakpur in Bangladesh's Khulna district and was staying in Mumbai illegally for some time. He arrived in Kolkata around two months ago, CID sources claimed.
Akhtaruzzaman, believed to reside in the US, possesses property in Kolkata. Further investigations into his involvement are ongoing.
A woman who might have been used to "honey trap" the Bangladesh MP before he was murdered in Kolkata has been detained in Dhaka.
The woman, identified as Shilanti Rahman, is a Bangladeshi national and the girlfriend of the prime accused Akhtaruzzaman Shahin, Bangladesh police sources told India Today.
