Jasvir Kaur, 29, (in black T-shirt) was shot dead, and her cousin, Gagandeep Kaur, 20, was critically wounded when 19-year-old Gaurav Singh Gill, a Punjab-origin youngster, opened fire on them in Carteret, New Jersey, on Friday. Both victims are from Nurmahal in Punjab’s Jalandhar district.

An Indian-origin woman was killed and another critically injured after being shot in New Jersey, reportedly by a 19-year-old Indian-origin man, authorities confirmed.

The incident occurred on June 12 in northeastern Middlesex County, the county prosecutor revealed in a press release.

Responding to reports of a shooting, officers found two female victims with gunshot wounds and airlifted them to the hospital in critical condition. Jasvir Kaur, 29, of Carteret, was pronounced dead at the hospital. The other victim, a 20-year-old woman identified as Kaur's cousin, remains in critical condition.

A neighbour described the scene, saying, "They're just laid out on the driveway. They weren't really moving."

Police apprehended Gaurav Gill later that day in connection with the shooting. He had been on the run for hours and was eventually cornered by law enforcement in a backyard about half a mile from the shooting site.

Gill, a resident of Kent, faces several charges, including one count of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, one count of second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, one count of fourth-degree possession of a high-capacity magazine, and one count of first-degree attempted murder, according to the press release.

Gurmukh Singh, the owner of the house where the two women were living, described Kaur as a hardworking and kind person.

The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and it is not yet known how or if Gill knew the victims. The investigation is ongoing, with police urging anyone with information to contact authorities.

Authorities have labelled the investigation as "active and continuing" and are seeking public assistance in gathering more information about the incident.
