The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has come out with an official statement in response to the growing controversy over the Class 12 examination results as well as the On-Screen Marking (OSM) scheme for evaluating these results. This is after numerous complaints voiced by students, parents, and teachers on social media about the poor performance witnessed in subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics. Some of the candidates were quoted as having not only scored poor grades but failing their board examinations despite being qualified enough for tough national entrance exams such as JEE.
The CBSE has released a notice about the facilities available for class XII students after the release of results. As per the notice issued by the board, those who have concerns with the results obtained can use the facility of a two-tier review process. In the first tier, students can apply for scanned copies of their evaluated answer sheets through the online portal.
For the second phase, students have an opportunity to get a confirmation of the differences and even ask for the re-evaluation of particular questions according to the marking scheme. As stated by CBSE, online applications for scanned copy will be accepted till the 22nd of this month for a fee of 700 rupees per subject. Requests for re-evaluation will be received between the 26th and 29th of this month.
In its statement, the board explained that the digital checking process was specifically designed to ensure that step-wise marks are properly awarded while minimising the risk of manual errors during assessment. The uproar comes at a sensitive time, as the CBSE Class 12 pass percentage dropped to 85.2 per cent this year, marking the lowest performance level in seven years. Under the board's established criteria, students must secure at least 33 pc marks separately in both theory and practical components to pass a subject.
In order to resolve any complaints, the CBSE declared that the process of revaluation will begin from May 19. Those students who feel that their marks do not truly depict their performance will have to first apply for obtaining photocopied evaluated answer scripts. Once they analyse their answer scripts, they will be able to request the evaluation of particular answers.
It has been told to candidates to follow the above-mentioned procedures strictly according to the specified time limits and pay the relevant fees. The committee promised that in case of any irregularity in the examination papers, appropriate actions will be taken immediately after being identified. Moreover, following the CBSE policies, those students who have not been able to pass in just one subject can also appear in compartment examinations if they fulfil the other conditions of passing.
