Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta with Education Minister Ashish Sood plants a sapling during the launch of the environmental initiative 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0' at Government Girls Senior Secondary School, at Shalimar Bagh, in New Delhi, Monday.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday announced an ambitious plan to plant over 70 lakh trees across the capital during the current season. Speaking at the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0' event held in New Delhi, the Chief Minister emphasised the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability and public participation.

Expressing her satisfaction with the widespread support for the campaign, CM Rekha Gupta said that all departments and schools in Delhi are actively participating in the second phase of the initiative. She appealed to individuals and social organisations to contribute by planting at least one tree each in honour of “Mother Nature and Earth,” with the goal of making Delhi greener and healthier.

“I am pleased that every department and school in Delhi is participating in the second series of ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’. We are requesting every individual and social organisation to plant at least one tree in the name of our Mother Nature and Earth. We have set a target of planting 70 lakh trees this season and hope this will significantly improve Delhi’s environment,” she told reporters.

Taking to her official account on 'X' (formerly Twitter), CM Gupta shared images from the event and revealed that she had planted a vermilion (sindoor) plant as part of the campaign initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She highlighted the symbolic significance of the plant, noting that the sindoor derived from its flowers represents the courage, honour, and self-confidence of Indian women.

“Today, I planted a vermilion plant in honour of my mother under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The sindoor prepared from the flowers of this tree is a symbol of the valour, honour, and self-confidence of Indian women. This plant will not only serve as a symbol of environmental protection but will also stand as a tribute to the heroic saga of Operation Sindoor,” her post stated.

Gupta further said that India is entering a new era of environmental consciousness, and the campaign reflects the spirit of a compassionate and sustainably developing nation. “Our aim is to make Delhi not just the national capital, but a symbol of greenery, cleanliness, and compassion. That’s why we’ve set a target of planting 70 lakh saplings this year to ensure a green and healthy Delhi for future generations,” she added. She also mentioned that her cabinet colleague Ashish Sood was present at the event.

In her address, the Chief Minister took the opportunity to criticise the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi. She accused them of opposing central government initiatives simply because they were associated with the Union Government’s name.

“The former Chief Minister and his government always had a problem with any scheme linked to the central government. They refused to implement the Ayushman Yojana, Vay Bandhan Yojana, Arogya Mandir, PM Awas Yojana, and even the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign,” Gupta said. “What was so difficult about this? Planting one tree in the name of nature, our mother, our motherland—is that not a noble cause? This is a social initiative. The AAP government had many opportunities, but they simply didn’t want to do the right thing.”

The ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to encourage citizens to plant trees as a tribute to their mothers and to nature, fostering both emotional and environmental awareness. The second phase of the initiative is now underway in Delhi with active government and public involvement.
