Heavy rain continued to pour down on Mumbai and surrounding areas on Saturday morning after an entire week of spells, prompting the met department to issue a red alert for many parts in Maharashtra, including Thane, Mumbai, Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri.
For other areas, such as Nashik, Pune, Satara, Jalgaon, and Gadchiroli, an orange alert has been issued.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) took to social media platform X on Saturday morning to inform the public about the red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for Mumbai, advising people to exercise caution and avoid stepping out for non-essential work.
While heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted for Mumbai on Saturday, some places may also experience extremely heavy rainfall, said the met department. Temperatures have dropped because of the constant downpour, with the maximum temperature on Saturday predicted to be around 29 degrees Celsius during the day, and 24 degrees Celsius during night.
The area of Palghar, meanwhile, may be lashed with rain from Sunday until August 19, as per the weather panel, because of a low-pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh.
Heavy rainfall will persist over Maharashtra for at least the next few days. Moderate rain is likely to occur at various places over Marathwada; moderate to heavy rain is most likely to occur at most places over the Konkan-Goa region; and light to moderate rain has been predicted over South Madhya Maharashtra and at a few places over North Madhya Maharashtra.
