A Delhi court is set to decide on February 25 whether to take cognisance of the chargesheet filed in the high-profile land-for-jobs case involving former railway minister Lalu Prasad, his family members, and others.

The matter was initially scheduled for hearing on February 16 before Special Judge Vishal Gogne. However, after reviewing clarifications provided by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on specific aspects of the case, the judge postponed the decision to February 25.

Earlier, on January 30, Judge Gogne had raised queries regarding the commonalities and distinct elements within the allegations presented in the chargesheet. These questions arose after the CBI informed the court that it had secured the necessary sanctions from the relevant authorities to prosecute public servant R.K. Mahajan.

During a prior hearing on January 16, the judge had stated that if the sanction for Mahajan’s prosecution was not processed by January 30, the "competent authority shall furnish" an explanation for the delay at the next hearing.

The CBI had initially filed the chargesheet in the case on November 26, 2024, submitting sanctions obtained for prosecuting 30 accused individuals. However, at that time, the sanction for Mahajan’s prosecution was still pending.

The case revolves around alleged irregularities in Group-D appointments within the West Central Railway zone, based in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. According to officials, between 2004 and 2009—when Lalu Prasad served as railway minister—several individuals were appointed in exchange for land parcels that were gifted or transferred to Prasad’s family members or associates.

The CBI registered the case on May 18, 2022, naming Lalu Prasad, his wife, two daughters, and several unidentified public officials and private individuals as accused in the matter.

With the next hearing set for February 25, all eyes will be on the Delhi court’s decision regarding the chargesheet’s cognisance, which could have significant legal implications for Lalu Prasad and other accused parties.
