OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, announced on Friday that it will open its first office in India, located in New Delhi, later this year. They also shared new information showing how quickly their tools are being used in the country.

OpenAI opened an office in India to show its support for the government's IndiaAI mission and to show its commitment to working with the government to develop AI that is made in India for the benefit of India, the company stated in a statement. The statement also said it will help OpenAI provide better service to its users in India, such as the millions of students, teachers, professionals, and developers who use OpenAI’s tools to learn, come up with new ideas, and solve problems for themselves and others.

The excitement and chances for AI in India are really amazing. India has everything it needs to become a top player in AI—great tech talent, a strong group of developers, and solid support from the government through the “IndiaAI Mission.” "Setting up our first office and creating a local team is a key step in our promise to bring advanced AI to more people across the country and to develop AI that is made for India and by India," said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.

India is the second-largest market for ChatGPT in terms of users, after the United States, and it is also one of the fastest-growing markets for the platform. The number of people in India who use ChatGPT every week went up by over four times compared to last year, as reported by OpenAI. OpenAI's choice to set up operations in India shows how much the country is leading in digital innovation and using AI.

"Because of strong investments in digital public infrastructure, AI talent, and large-scale business solutions, India is well-placed to lead the next big changes driven by AI," said Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

As part of the IndiaAI Mission, we are creating an environment where AI is trustworthy and includes everyone, and we are happy to have OpenAI as a partner in moving forward with this goal to make sure the benefits of AI are available to all citizens," the minister said. The country is also in the top five developer markets worldwide on the OpenAI platform.

India has the biggest number of students using ChatGPT compared to any other country around the world. The exact address of the office in New Delhi has not been finalised yet.

Local businesses and organisations in India are already using OpenAI's tools to solve important problems, such as providing AI-based farming help, making hiring processes faster and better, and improving ways to manage governance.

OpenAI is planning to hold its first Education Summit in India this month. OpenAI will host its first Developer Day in India later this year, uniting the country's active group of developers, startups, and businesses that are helping to create the future of AI.

OpenAI has mentioned that they are currently looking to hire people for positions in India. More information about the new office and the activities we plan to do will be shared in the next few months.
