Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Fridday held a high-profile roadshow in Puducherry to bolster the National Democratic Alliance’s campaign ahead of the April 9 Assembly elections, drawing large crowds and prompting extensive security deployment across the city.

The visit comes at a crucial stage of campaigning, with the NDA, comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party, All India NR Congress led by Chief Minister N Rangasamy, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and other allies, seeking to consolidate its position in the Union Territory.

PM Modi arrived in Chennai from New Delhi earlier in the day and flew to Puducherry by helicopter. He was received at the airport by Rangasamy and senior BJP leaders before proceeding to the starting point of the roadshow.

The Prime Minister began the procession from Ajanta Signal Junction, travelling in an open-top vehicle along a route that extended up to Raj Theatre. Supporters lined both sides of the stretch, waving party flags, raising slogans and showering flower petals as he acknowledged the crowds.

The turnout, comprising BJP workers and cadres of allied parties, underscored the NDA’s effort to project strength in the closing days of the campaign. The roadshow is being viewed as a key attempt to mobilise voters and energise the party’s base ahead of polling.

Security arrangements were significantly tightened for the visit, with authorities deploying a five-layer security grid across the city. The entire route was placed under heavy surveillance, with personnel from local police and central forces stationed at key points. The use of drones was prohibited, and access along the route was strictly regulated.

Officials ensured traffic diversions and crowd management measures were in place to facilitate the smooth conduct of the event, given the scale of public participation.

After concluding the roadshow, Modi was scheduled to return to Chennai later in the evening.

With campaigning entering its final phase, the Prime Minister’s visit is expected to lend momentum to the NDA’s electoral push in Puducherry, where the alliance is aiming to retain and strengthen its political foothold in the Assembly.
