Despite significant improvements in school infrastructure across Assam, hundreds of government schools continue to function without basic amenities such as electricity and boys' toilets, according to the latest official data released by the state education department.

Out of 44,243 government schools in Assam, 676 schools are yet to receive electricity connections, accounting for around 1.53 per cent of the total institutions. To address the shortfall, the state government has earmarked Rs 4 crore in the current financial year to provide electricity to all the remaining schools.

In addition to these, 643 schools that do not have access to the conventional power grid have already been equipped with solar energy systems, ensuring they have an alternative source of electricity for academic and administrative activities.

The education department has also made substantial progress in improving sanitation facilities across schools. While all government schools in Assam now have toilets for girls, 283 schools, representing 0.64 per cent of the total, are still without dedicated toilets for boys. Construction work for these facilities has already commenced during the ongoing financial year.

The latest figures also indicate steady progress in strengthening digital education infrastructure across the state.

Of the 10,965 schools directly managed by the Assam government, 10,033 have been provided with at least one digital learning facility, including ICT laboratories, Smart Classrooms or Tele-Education facilities. These initiatives are aimed at improving access to technology-enabled learning, particularly in rural and remote areas.

The remaining schools are yet to receive digital infrastructure. During the current financial year, 328 additional schools are scheduled to be equipped with ICT laboratories, reducing the number of schools without digital learning facilities to 608.

The state government has planned to extend digital infrastructure to the remaining institutions in the next financial year as part of its broader effort to modernise government schools.

The infrastructure development programme forms part of Assam's roadmap to ensure that every government school is equipped with essential facilities, including electricity, sanitation and digital learning resources, by March 2027.

Over the past few years, the state has expanded investments in school infrastructure through targeted funding for classroom construction, digital education, sanitation and renewable energy solutions, with a focus on improving learning conditions and reducing disparities between urban and rural educational institutions.
