BJP vs TMC: Chargesheet war erupts ahead of Bengal polls

A political war of words erupted in West Bengal on Saturday after the BJP and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) traded sharp accusations ahead of the West Bengal Assembly Election.

Hours after Union Home Minister Amit Shah released a 35-page “chargesheet” against the TMC government during his visit to the city, the ruling party hit back with a counter “chargesheet,” dismissing the BJP’s document as baseless and politically motivated.

The TMC’s response was presented by state minister Bratya Basu along with party MPs Mahua Moitra and Kirti Azad.

Launching a strong attack, Basu questioned the credibility of those issuing the chargesheet. Drawing an analogy from Julius Caesar, he remarked that when a judge and a criminal occupy the same position, the situation reflects the nature of the chargesheet being presented. He also took a swipe at Shah, referring to past legal controversies and questioning his moral authority to level accusations.

Basu further alleged that those targeting West Bengal were ignoring issues in their own states, including concerns related to governance and public welfare. He asserted that attempts to politically target Bengal would ultimately fail, adding that the strength of the state’s people, particularly women, would prevail.

Mahua intensified the attack with a sharp metaphor, stating that when “a joker sits on a throne, the palace turns into a circus,” in an apparent dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shah. She accused the BJP of consistently insulting Bengalis and alleged that people from the state are often unfairly targeted and labelled in BJP-ruled regions.

Mahua further claimed that the BJP leadership lacked the credibility to question the people of Bengal, and dismissed the chargesheet as politically driven. She also referenced Shah’s past legal challenges, alleging hypocrisy in his current stance.

Azad, a former cricketer who previously belonged to the BJP, said his experience within the party gave him insight into its functioning. He alleged that misleading narratives were being promoted under the guise of political campaigning and criticised the Union Home Minister’s remarks.

The exchange comes amid intensifying electioneering in the state, with both parties escalating their rhetoric as the campaign gains momentum. The BJP is seeking to challenge the ruling TMC, which is aiming to retain power in the upcoming Assembly elections.
